Flight Lieutenant Leonard Arthur French RAF (1923 -1944)

This site is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Arthur French, the pilot of the RAF Lancaster bomber which crashed at Clarbec in the night of 7 August 1944 and to his aircraft’s six crew members. 

EN: On 3 August 2024 the commune of Clarbec - in conjunction with its traditional Fête de St Laurent - held a ceremony in remembrance of Flight Lieutenant Leonard Arthur French and the crew of Lancaster bomber LM 111 WP-G. The speakers at the ceremony around Flight Lieutenant French’s Commonwealth War Grave were: Nicole Lie, mayor of Clarbec, Stuart McKie-Smith, son of the Lancaster’s navigator, George Leslie Smith, Richard Grant, son of the rear gunner, Charles Gold, James Brookbank and Becca French, nephew and niece of the pilot, Flight Lieutenant French.Transcripts of their speeches can be found under the “Documents” heading of this website.
